Inspired by the concepts behind two of Joe Pilates' lost pieces, the Tensatoner™ is set to become your new favorite thing!
Originally published in my Big Book of Pilates ©2013, the Tensatoner™ is a resistance device with unique proportions making it more versatile than any-sized magic circle for stability and increased powerhouse connectivity.
Originally handcrafted in the U.S. from gorgeous, durable Cherry wood, the Tensatoner™ launched in September 2021.
New U.K. Production began in Dec 2023
I'm so excited to share the original Tensatoner™ with you!
The journey from concept to creation, and re-creation, has taken 11 years! From its introduction in my 2013 book, The Women’s Health Big Book of Pilates, this has been a passion project all the way!
Let me start by guessing your questions:
What IS a Tensatoner™?
As its name may suggest, The Tensatoner™ is a tension device designed to facilitate muscle tonus. (i.e. resting muscle tension – or – skeletal stability.)
It's a small compressive device that, simply speaking, is the missing piece of your powerhouse and the missing piece of Joe’s inventions. Its size and weight offer more adaptability and portability than a resistance ring and its design allows for more applications.
What can it do for me?
The applications of the Tensatoner™ are impressive. It is at once: a resistance device, a stabilizer, a teaching tool, an isometric trainer … and on and on.
The time spent to develop proper shape, size, weight, tension and spring travel makes this device so multi-functional it can be used to strengthen (and skeletally stabilize) the thighs, ankles, feet, fingers, wrists, neck, chest, shoulders and pelvis!
The Tensatoner™ instructs internal and external rotation of the femurs at the hips as well as teaching true parallel. It serves as both a foot and toe alignment corrector, a neck muscle activation ‘pillow’, and a wrist and finger activator.
And weighing in at only a pound and half, it’s punching well above its weight!
Example of Tensatoner™ function: The Roll Up
We know that stabilizing the midline is a critical component of a successful Roll Up; though even when repeatedly cueing a midline squeeze, the chances are slim that your clients will be able to engage and sustain that activation for long or with the parallel legs directed by Joe Pilates. In the past we’ve put pillows, balls, rings, hands, etc. in between the thighs, knees ankles, feet, etc. however with the size, weight and springs of the Tensatoner™ you're unconsciously triggered to adduct by placement alone.
What can it do for my business?
Have we learned in lockdown that the apparatus are our best 'hands' when teaching Matwork to our clients? I know I have.
The directive shape of the Spine Corrector, or the intensifying effects of the magic circle; I've learned to lean on the apparatus to replace my guiding hands. If I were to teach a class today, with a group of people all trying to find their powerhouses, I would 100% want Tensatoners™ around the room.
And what I've learned from training others with the Tensatoner™ is this: places where I would otherwise need to cue or correct have been all-but-obliterated. The action of engaging the Tensatoner™ does what my hands and words can’t match.
Even the very act of having your clients ‘holding’ this device between their legs (its primary function, though far from its only function) sends autonomic signals to the brain to create stability via tension. This in turn “teaches” mind and body to work together to find those connections again and again; truly an invaluable teaching tool.
Is it only for Pilates?
Absolutely not! Coming from a gym background allows me to say with confidence that "Tony" is the missing piece of many different exercises.
The Tensatoner™ informs our inner thigh activity to increase low abdominal connections. It can be used independently as a foot and toe alignment corrector, a neck muscle activator, and a wrist and finger strengthener.
I’ve been hard at work creating, filming, editing and uploading loads of videos with over 150(!) unique exercises for you, and while they will all enhance your Pilates practice they will also boost the awareness and activation needed for all fitness practices, and daily life in general.
Current titles available to rent*:
"The stability I got from this little gadget made all my openings deeper and all my reaches further! Before I even started the workout I ordered two more!"
Cecile E., Pilates Teacher
"Oh My TONY! Holy opening up of my back and hips! I have seriously never rolled so well. It feels amazing and so telling! What a fantastic little tool for feedback and engagement. There are many exercises that feel deeper with Tony; like, I've never felt my low belly like that in the Overhead!"
Carol I., Pilates Teacher
"I LOVE the Tensatoner! Don't be fooled, it's going to make you work all of those small muscles. I feel so much more connected when I use it as part of my practice. Tony definitely keeps me honest. I'm happy I invested!"
Eleshia H., Pilates Teacher
"Every client that uses Tony once wants to buy one!! I had a huge epiphany with my hip! Wow. Thanks again."
Marlene P.R., Pilates Teacher
"It's honestly been the missing link for many of my clients. After doing an exercise seemingly well for years, they have a visible lightbulb moment as soon as I add Tony to the picture. Despite an arsenal of clues for every exercise, often Tony gets my clients to find what I'm looking for better than my words. Every studio should have at least one!"
Juliet S.M., Pilates Teacher
"Tony helps me delve deeper into the work, finding and recruiting my intrinsic muscles. I love the extra challenge that 'he' helps me feel and find through my workouts; no chance to slack off. My powerhouse, adductors and postural muscles all find the "tremor of truth" with different placements. It's compact but delivers a powerful punch!"
Renae B., Pilates Teacher
